Vintage portrait by the Danish artist Sophus Vermehren. It shows a young girl with an excellent depiction of her features and the elegant dress. She is identified on the reverse as Sophie Bruuns born Gyldenstjerne-Sehestedt (1840-1900) and the painting is after an original by prof. Schytt from 1870.
Vermehren himself was a well-known portrait painter and this piece clearly shows his talent. He graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Art in 1892. He won several prizes, e.g. the Neuhausen extraprize in 1893, the Bielke medal in 1896 and the Raben-Levetzau prize in 1901. He exhibited on Charlottenborg in Copenhagen in the period 1891-1915 and on several other Danish exhibitions. He was sold at Bruun Rasmussen in Copenhagen on 25 April 1990 for $12,381. Sophus Vermehren is in particular well-known for his interiors and girl portraits. Size: The painting is 21" wide and 26.5" high without the frame. The frame is 4.5" wide.
