![]() Palais Royal Scent Casket with 2 Eglomise Scent Bottles, 19th Century
item # 68437E
This is definitely one from the Palais Royal shops of 19th century Paris (Napoleon III era) and was surely a souvenir of the Victorian Grand Tour. The outer leather case/etui is a bit tattered with age, but still retains all of its marcasite and mother of pearl decorations. It must have really shimmered like a gem when new.
The interior is remarkably unscathed; the one scent bottle even has a remainder of perfume still inside and still smelling wonderful. The two inside scent bottles are both in the old 'eglomise' style (a term usually referring to back-painted or reverse-painted glass). These each have tiny architectural paintings of favorite scenes of Paris monuments and buildings.
