![]() French Cranberry Glass Biscuit Jar with Gilded Bronze Dore Art Nouveau Butterflies, Dragonflies, and Flowers Circa 1880 - 1900
item # DARA13JW
French biscuit jar; probably Paris, and most likely a glass maker like Baccarat or one of the other high end French glass makers specializing in crystal and colored glass.
It is 12” high to the top of the handle, and 5 ½” wide. The jar is cranberry art glass, a beautiful shade of pale ruby. The glass appears to be slightly paneled all the way around the body. The pontil on the underside bottom is round and ground smooth. The metalwork appears to be bronze dore, heavily gilded in gold, and exceptionally detailed. The period is Art Nouveau. All of the metal is attached to the glass jar, except for the lid. On the glass there are sprays of flowers and leaves painted in gold enamel. The gilded bronze is the base, then goes up the sides, circles the rim, drops down from the rim, and circles up to form the figural reticulated handle. Around the base is a circle of flowers and leaves, with the same flowers and leaves circling the rim, but facing in the opposite direction. Up the sides the metal are fronds and sprays of leaves and berries with a large winged insect on each spray. The detail is remarkable. More winged insects are attached to the flowers around the rim. The finial of the lid is another winged insect. Around the top of the lid are winged fairies. The metal is in exceptional shape, with just a few tiny spots of green patina showing through where the gilding shows tiny little spots of wear.
