This is a linen layover pillow sham with absolutely gorgeous whitework embroidery all done by hand circa 1880-90's. This sham (it could also be used as a tablecloth) measures 36 inches square; the scalloped edges are covered in hand embroidered buttonhole stitches; around the edge to a 4 inch depth are beautifully hand embroidered flowers and twining vines. Someone stitched a ribbon across 2 of the back corners presumable to keep it on the pillow better, this was done at a later date and could easily be removed if one wished. The sham is in excellent condition.
