This has a most interesting old slab tortoise shell frame, all inset with pique gold stars. On ivory, the painting is about 2" in diameter and jam-packed with fine detail.
It is not a direct copy of a particular painting, as was often the case with these mid-1800s Grand Tour souvenir trade paintings. The early 'tourists' of the Victorian era wanted to take home reminders and icons of their visits to the museums of the world, particularly of the Louvre, and there sprung up ample call for fine miniatures of the paintings therein, so we see quite a few similar scenes done in miniature from that period. Not so many have a signature, which we do find in this one. Most, if signed, might be signed with the name of the artist who did the original painting, meaning it is 'after' or 'apres' that artist's work. What we don't see so often is a frame like this one.
Excellent condition. Not a chip or nip or crack anywhere, on frame or ivory wafer painting. No moisture damage under the glass cover, either, and it looks to me like every single one of those gold stars is still in place, over a hundred of them.
The frame is 3 7/8" x 4.25", with a 2.5" diameter at its center.
