This is a beautiful French faience, or soft paste porcelain, wall pocket vase. The region is probably Paris, or perhaps Sceaux.
There are two incised marks on the back, a capital I or number one, and a symbol that is a round circle with points at each end.
The wall pocket is 12 ¼” high, 9 ¼” long and 3” deep.
The faience is covered with a type of glaze in a cream color, and filled with tiny ash flecks, which indicates an early date of manufacture.
The blank or mold curves to the right at the bottom, and expands out in a fan shape going to the top. There are leaves and flowers in raised relief, and highlighted with a brown enamel color. At the very top there is a bow, with another bow centered on the front, and both bows are in raised detail.
The hand painting is how it was done in the 18th century. There are patterns of boughs, limbs and twigs painted in brown, with green added over the brown. The cherry or apple blossoms are painted with large blobs of raised enamel in white, with some of the blobs tinted or colored in pink or red. There are bits of yellow color in the middle of the blossoms. These are the colors used in the last quarter of the 1700s.
There are some flaws due to the age of the vase. At the very top there is a long age crack that does not go through the faience. On the inside, where the camera could not reach, at the bottom of that rounded tip, there are two age cracks that do not go through the faience. There are some faint brown lines in the glazing material. There are a few tiny age cracks around the bow on the front of the vase that do not go through the faience. Anything else, bumps or irregularities, are there because it was how these old pieces were made.
