![]() French Baccarat 2nd Empire Jar or Vase, Mid 1800s
item # AUT91JW
This is a fine old Baccarat crystal encased in the requisite French Empire neo-classical figural ormolu. All is pillared with graceful winged caryatid figures as pillars to the 4 female figures, and each of those represent one of the Arts. You see painting, sculpture, music and literature represented in the forms and accoutrements of the figures, and each is notably clad in ancient Roman or Greek style garments, typical of the Napoleonic Empire's signature motifs.
The style incorporated such motifs and figures from ancient Roman and Greek and Asian & Egyptian ruins and art 'acquired' by Napoleon in his many battles and in the expansion of the French Empire during his Military career and his reign. The style was revived during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew, Louis Napoleon, or 'Napoleon III' in the last half of the 1800s. We believe this jar or vase is from the Napoleon III revival of the French Empire style. It is richly clad in gilt bronze, and is substantial and heavy in the hand. A fine Empire piece for vitrine or use, it has no damage or flaws to note. Very good to excellent condition, no chips or nips on that rim (which also has no evidence of ever having had a lid or rim attached), and the dore bronze is also in fine condition, with a fine gold mercury finish to it and no bends or losses. 4.75" high, with 3.25" and 4" diameters.
